Famous Indian Football Players

Also at present the Indian Football might have been overshadowed by the success and strength maintained by the Indian Cricket team at the international level, still Football remains the 2nd most popular sport in India after Cricket, and in some parts of the nation its hysterical popularity among the fans leaves the same of Cricket much far behind. Especially the states of Goa, Kerala, Manipur, West Bengal, Sikkim and Mizoram are purely Football-crazy and die hard fans of the game.

The Glorious Yesteryears
The Indian Football team in the past has done considerably well at the international and won some coveted championships and trophies. The period from the year 1951 to the year 1962 is considered to be The Golden Era of Indian Football, and the national team won many accolades during the tenure at the international level. The Indian Football team won Gold Medals at the Asian Games 1951 held at New Delhi, and the Asian Games 1962 held at Jakarta. It also has to its credit the achievement of being the first Asian Football team to have reached the Semi Final stage of the Melbourne Olympics 1956. The Indian Football team has recently been successful in winning the Jawaharlal Nehru Gold Cup 2007. This was the 13th year of this tournament, and the Indian team has won the tournament for the first time.

Gems of the past
From time to time, Indian Football team has got a wide array of gems who have contributed their best efforts in getting the team a shining performance in the international events. ZAMBIA TRASHED INDIA

ZAMBIA TRASHED INDIAN TEAM WITH 5-0 WIN AT FARTODA,GOA TODAY.  WHEN PLAYED WITH MALAYSIA, INDIAN TEAM WAS HAVING CHETRI AND JEJE IN THIER SQUAD. THESE 2 PLAYER MADE INDIA WIN AT SALT LAKE STADIUM AGAINST MALAYSIA. BUT IF TALKING ABOUT TODAY, INDIA GAVE A VERY POOR PERFORMANCE AT GOA. GK KARANJEET PERFORMANCE WAS VERY POOR, HIS CLEARENCE AND GOAL KICKS HARDLY CROSSED OUR OWN HALF.  DEFENCE WAS NOT SO EXISTENT, THEY WERE JUST LIMPING ON THE PITCH. MIDFIELD WAS GUILTY OF GIVING AWAY THE BALL EASILY, THEY WERE JUST TRYING TO FEED STRIKERS THROUGH LONG PASSES. WHEN DEFENCE AND MIDFIELD ARE NOT EXISTENT STRIKERS CAN'T BE BLAMED. OVERALL TEAM INDIA GAVE A POOR PERFORMANCE, LACK OF ACCURACY, NOT SO PROPER TRAINED AND AT LAST THEY HAVE TO CROSS MANY HURDLES TO REACH AT TOP. THIS ALSO AFFECTED TEAM INDIA'S RANKING. INDIA TO TAKE ZAMBIA ON 29TH NOVEMBER

In the run-up to the SAFF Championship, the Indian National Football Team is all set to host Zambia in a FIFA International Friendly at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Tuesday. The match serves as the perfect backdrop for the eight-Nation tournament which kicks-off on December 2, 2011.

The SAFF Championship, at the moment can wait; and against Zambia India would be taking the field without the awesome twosome – strikers Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua, both of whom are away for trials at Scottish giants Rangers.

Chief Coach Savio Medeira stays aware of the Zambian challenge. “The match is very important for us. This is a great opportunity to gauge where we stand. The Zambian team are ranked higher than us and are an athletic side,” he said. “It will be a learning experience for the boys ahead of the SAFF Championship.”

Govin Singh and Nirmal Chhetri make a comeback to the National squad for the match.
However, Medeira seemed unfazed by the absence of his strikers. “It’s true the duo has brought us laurels in the recent past. But this is a great opportunity for the others to prove themselves,” he added.

The boys, nevertheless, stay unperturbed by their higher ranked rivals. They look forward to repeat their performance against Malaysia when India got the better of them in a two-match series.

“If we play as a unit – the manner we played against Malaysia, we should pose a challenge for Zambia,” quipped Baljit Sahni. “We hope to bank on the crowd support. We will give our 100 percent,” he echoed.

The Kick-off is at 3:45 pm and would be telecast live on DD Sports.

We ‘ll be better on Tuesday as Renard sends out warning to India

We ‘ll be better on Tuesday as Renard sends out warning to India thumbnail
Herve Renard has said the Chipolopolo Boys will be better on Tuesday when they face a much tougher opponent in the India national team after beating a provincial select side, Goa XI by 4 goals to nil on Saturday.

The 43 year old described the game as average despite his boys dominating play only restricting the home side to two shots on target in 90 minutes.
“For us it was an average game and I’m sure  we will be better on Tuesday,” the Frenchman told the media at Nehru Stadium in a post match press briefing.
Though Renard expected more goals, he had to be content with the four scored as Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba  scored a brace with Evans Kangwa and Chisamba Lungu grabbed the other goals with all goals coming in a space of 20 minutes after Goa Select side had taken a lead immediately after the break.
“I was sure we going to equalise. The most difficult was scoring the first goal,” said Renard
And that equaliser came when Joseph Sitali’s defence splitting pass released Sate Sate down the middle and the 17 year old Kalampa forward beat the advancing Goa goalkeeper as the floodgates opened.
For the home side goal, Kalililo Kakonje failed to make use of height as he could didn’t with a simple aerial ball and that will raise alot of questions on the 27 year old goalkeeper who was released by TP Mazembe.

Bruce Musakanya is set to make his debut on Tuesday after missing out on Saturday

“I was expecting more goals than four (Zambia scored). Today (Saturday) I think we should have [added] scored three or more goals. In the first half were three times in front of the goal, like in-front of the keeper but we shot outside,” the French-born trainer said after the MTN Super League second top scorer Luka Lungu failed to transfer his end of the season club form to the international fold.
The Power Dynamos who got 13 goals in the league and four in Barclays Cup was replaced by top scorer in the league with 14 goals, Evans Kangwa whose 2 goals in Barclays Cup saw Nkana reach the semi finals.
The other half time substitutions saw Chisamba Lungu replace Felix Katongo while Sate Sate was introduced for Francis Kasonde as Renard reverted to the traditional 4-4-2 formation with Chisamba on the right wing and Sate Sate playing off his Kalampa strike partner Kangwa.

Luka Lungu is the leading scorer in Zambia with 17 goals but suffered stage flight after he missed two glorius chances
After ‘Sate Sate’ had equalised, it was the turn of Kangwa who smashed a Jimmy Chisenga cross into the back of the net. Chisenga had overlapped up the right flank and produced a teasing low drive cross that ‘Sate Sate’ missed but luckily Kangwa was at the end of it.
‘Sate Sate’ got the third after connecting a layoff from the left flanks and in stoppage time, Chisamba scored the goal of the match outside the 18 yard box. At about 25-yards, the Russian based playmaker showed his skills and teased his marker with his trikery and before the Goa XI player could realise, Chisa unleashed a low-drive shot that left the goalkeeper on the floor as the rampant Zambia won 4-1.
Next is India, and the much talked about Bruce Musakanya who was one of the only outfield player not to be used is set to make his international debut. Jacob Banda is also likely to start in goal ahead of Kakonje after that blunder.

Goa XI VS Zambia

The Goa Select XI go into the match against the Zambian national football team not knowing where the assembled squad stands against the Africans.

Coach Armando Colaco said that it was an honour for him to be the coach of Goa XI for this prestigious event and a golden chance to play a higher ranked opponent. He also mentioned that the mood in the camp was upbeat with the Goan youngsters keen to lock horns with such a strong opponent and showcase their talent.

But Armando was candid enough to say that the match could go anyway. His side could get trashed or cause an upset, but for him Zambia are the favourites for the match to be played at the Nehru Stadium, Margao.

Armando named his likely starting eleven with right-back Valeriano Rebello as the captain and goalkeeper Felix D'Souza as the vice-captain of the team.

The match is slated for a 16.00 IST kick-off with DD Sports showing the match live.

Sunil Chhetri, Jeje Lalpekhlua may play against Hamburg

India international Sunil Chhetri will get yet another chance to seal a move to Europe and this time, the stakes are higher. Chhetri and his national team strike partner Jeje Lalpekhlua reached Glasgow for a trial with Scottish champions Rangers, and if things go as per plan, they will feature in a friendly for the club against Hamburg on Tuesday.
It is learnt that the club is planning to use the match as a part of their trials to see if the duo can fit into their style of play and of course, if they can match the standard. The tie will be played in Hamburg and a source scouts from Portuguese clubs Sporting Lisbon and Benfica will be monitoring the two players.
A Rangers spokesperson told us the decision on the duo’s inclusion for the friendly has not been taken yet. However, he added, “Chhetri and Jeje will train with the first team under manager Ally McCoist at the club’s training complex, Murray Park. They will also attend Sunday’s game against Kilmarnock.”
The biggest challenge for the two Indian strikers, who have been in prime form for the country as well as their clubs, will be to cope up with the conditions in Glasgow, with the maximum temperature expected to be around 8 degree Celsius. Chhetri had brief chat with former Rangers striker Alan Gow, who now plays for East Bengal, before leaving. Jeje, too, was quick to acknowledge the challenge that lies ahead of him.
“The conditions in Scotland are very different from what we are used to in India. I think that could be a major hurdle for both of us. I won’t have much time to prove myself so I will have to get used to the conditions quickly and not allow it to ruin my chances,” Jeje said.

INDIA TAKES OVER MALAYSIA AT SALT LAKE STADIUM

INDIA 3-2 MALAYSIA
INDIA: SUNIL CHHETRI-2,JEJE-1
MALAYSIA: SAFEE SALI-2

KOLKATA: Riding on a brace from star striker Sunil Chhetri, India defeated Malaysia 3-2 in the second International Friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Wednesday.

For India, Chhetri scored twice – in the 39th and the 53rd minute and fellow striker Jeje Lalpekhlua found the back of the net in 47th minute; while for Malaysia, Mohd. Sali Mohd Safee scored in the 45th and 59th minute.

The Indians played positive football and dominated proceedings in both the sessions. In fact, the Indians could have won by a bigger margin but for some inept finishing.

The midfield combination of Baldeep Singh, Francis Fernandes, Rocus Lamare and Lalrindika Ralte combined well and never allowed the rivals to settle down. Baldeep was a revelation in the central midfield and stayed the pivot on which the Indian team revolved. Captain Rahim Nabi also played an inspirational game.

Coach Savio Medeira was a pleased man. “The boys played their hearts out,” he said. “It’s good to end with a victory. We did make quite a few changes in the playing XI and it paid off,” he added. “The SAFF Championship is knocking at the door and we needed to give a chance to everyone to gauge their match temperament.”

“We didn’t get much time to prepare for the match but the boys rose to the occasion.”
Chhetri who stayed the cynosure of all eyes said, “We played well. It’s a special feeling when you score for your country.”

The first International Friendly between the two teams had ended 1-1.

INDIA: Subhasish Roy Chaudhari (G); Syed Rahim Nabi (C), Gouramangi Singh, Anwar Ali (Mahesh Gawli - 61st), Debabrata Roy (Samir Naik - 62nd); Francis Fernandes (Anthony Periera - 71st), Baldeep Singh (Jewel Raja - 78th) , Rocus Lamare, Lalrindika Ralte (Clifford Miranda – 90th); Jeje Lalpekhlua, Sunil Chhetri (Sushil Kumar Singh – 89th).
