India's big bucks football league

Italy World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has added his name to the growing list of football legends set to feature in the inaugural Indian football league.

In a competition similar to the successful Indian Premier League in cricket, some 30 foreign players and six coaches will be auctioned off in Kolkata for the league that runs February 25-April 8.

Other players expected to participate include Frenchman Robert Pires, former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, Portuguese midfielder Maniche, Nigeria's Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Morientes, Hernan Crespo and ex-Argentina captain Pablo Sorin.

"We have signed seven 'icon' players for the auction and each of the six teams will have one such player with a $600,000 salary cap," Bhaswar Goswami, executive director of Celebrity Management Group (CMG) said.

CMG has signed a 30-year deal with the Indian Football Association for the league and has floated tenders for franchises, Goswami said.

"We have started with six teams this year, all in the state of West Bengal but have already been approached to expand the league to other parts of the country.

"Every team will have $2.5 million to spend in the first year. They will have a maximum of four foreigners and a compulsory six under-21 Indian players in their squad."

Pele, Cafu India Tour Cancelled

 Pele                            Cafu

The legendary Pele and Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning captain Cafu are unlikely to make the proposed trip to India for the Super Soccer event at the Salt Lake stadium on January 23.

According to sources close to the Brazilian greats, neither has any plan to visit Kolkata this month, leaving many to question whether the event will materialise at all. JPR Events, organisers of the event, had claimed that Pele would be in Kolkata as ambassador of the world stars outfit, of which Cafu was named as captain.

When contacted, JPR Events CEO Sunil Hamal - who chaired the January 6 press conference to announce the Super Soccer match between Superstars XI and a Baichung Bhutia-led Indian XI - refused to make any comment and, instead, sought "24 hours" time to clear doubts over the proposed match and the star cast.

It has been learnt that Sport 10, which owns commercial rights to Pele's image and intellectual property worldwide, was taken aback by the report of the legend being associated with the Kolkata match. Sport 10, through its US counsel Arent Fox, has reportedly sent a 'Cease and Desist' letter to JPR Events requesting that it immediately cease all unauthorized use of his name or image with the exhibition match.

"Marcos Evangelista de Moraes (better known as Cafu) is hundred per cent not going to India," said somebody close to the player.

French star and Arsenal legend Robert Peres will be another absentee from the list announced by the organisers.

The exhibition match - which, according to JPR Events, is part of the world stars outfit's marathon tour of 20 countries - is supposed to be held as a fund-raiser for the Football Players' Association of India, of which Baichung is the president.

FC Barcelona Plans To Visit India By May- June

 2012-01-12 PARTIDO 21

After Argentina and Bayern Munich, it could be the turn of Lionel Messi to make his second trip to India within a few months, this time in FC Barcelona colours, if the plans of the Indian promoters of the trip go according to script.

A final decision on Barca's trip is likely to be out in the next week or so with the negotiations between an Indian sports management firm and Spanish giants in the final stages about a tour to India in May-June. The matches are being planned to be held after the Champions Leauge final in Munich on May 19.

The organizers are also keen to avoid a clash with the money spinning IPL, which has scheduled its final on May 27 in Chennai. According to one of the key negotiators, Lucas Lugo, CEO of We are Futbol, a consulting group based in Buenos Aires, the officials at Barcelona are very much interested to make the trip to India this summer.

"So far they had several offers but rejected many of them. But they are very keen to tour India this summer. We started negotiations six months back and we expect to get a final word with a week's time. Since it is a such a big club they have to get approvals from several Boards. The chances are very good," Lugo told TOI from Buenos Aires.

It was Lugo's firm that played a key role in getting the Argentina national team to Kolkata last September. Asked whether Barca is now looking at India after entering China through a deal with Tencent, China's leading internet service provider , Lugo said Barcelona is keen to tap the huge potential in India.

"The Indian market is really big and Barca looks at its immense potential. We know that cricket is big in India but once you get the footballjavascript:; culture in there will be a huge interest," Lugo added.

Besides Barca, the organizers are also looking to rope in two more big clubs to play exhibition matches in three Indian cities. "We have got 100 per cent interest from FC Barcelona in touring India during this summer.

"The other clubs who have been approved and showed a positive are Paris Saint-Germain FC Rangers ( Scotland) and Juventus," one of the promoters of the Kshatriya Sports Management (KSM) said.

"The tour of Barcelona is being planned with Mumbai, Bangalore and Kochi as the likely venues. We are hoping to conduct the matches at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai, Sree Kanteerava stadium in Bangalore and the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in Kochi."

Bayern Munich started with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk in the centre of the park with Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos being the wide men.

India’s Savio Medeira interestingly decided to field Rakesh Masih alongside Rocus Lamare in the midfield with Climax Lawrence being on the bench. Sushil Singh was preferred over Jeje Lalpekhlua to partner Bhaichung Bhutia.

Phillip Lahm made a surging run to find Thomas Mueller who found Mario Gomez whose shot almost kissed the far side as early as in the fifth minute.

The away side were casual in their approach as after an initial burst for the opening couple of minutes, they gauged the strength of the opposition, pretty much like the boxer who understands the power needed to knock the opponent down, and took it easy.

The Indians never really managed to come out of their own half as the Bavarians dominated every inch of the field.

In the second session, the game was pretty much the same with the first notable piece of action being Subasish Roy Chowdhury making a diving save from a Gomez attempt in the 53rd minute.

The German giants continued to dominate the possession as Savio Medeira’s side were kept inside their own half.

India’s first real shot on target came only in the 82nd minute when Bhaichung Bhutia released the onrushing Jewel Raja whose shot went straight into the hands of Neuer.

The journey  came to an end for the Sikkimese Sniper as he bowed out for one last time with the crowd giving him a standing ovation.

Bayern couldn’t add to their tally in the second period as the match eventually finished 4-0 in favour of the German giants.

Cooperage, a ladder to football dreams

It took a long time coming, but young football enthusiasts finally have reason to cheer with the much-ignored Cooperage football stadium being sanctioned a facelift last year. A beneficiary of FIFA's 'Win in India with India' programme, which has sponsored artificial turfs for eight stadiums in the country, Cooperage's new avatar has opened a whole new world to kids chasing football dreams.

The lack of quality football grounds has for long been the story of the sport in the city, often nipping talent in the bud. But with Cooperage's renovation almost complete, that is set to change. The laying of the state-of-the-art turf, which was completed in November, means a better platform for children playing the sport to showcase their talents.

Giving further fillip to the developments was the announcement by English Premier League giants, and arguably the most widely followed football team in the world, Manchester United, that it will open a branch of the Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS) at the ground in affiliation with the Western India Football Association (WIFA). The soccer school will give kids aged eight to 18 the chance to train with some of the best coaches in the world and learn football the United way.

Terming the move as one that would change the dynamics of football for kids in the city, Henry Menezes, CEO of WIFA, said that the new Cooperage will be part of every child's life. "Coming to Cooperage will now be an experience for children who kept away from the stadium because of its condition before the renovation. Even kids coming to watch football games will develop aspirations to play the sport looking at the facilities," said Menezes.

By bringing Manchester United on board, Menezes felt children will have a connection to an icon. "We lack icons in our country and by getting United to Cooperage that's going to change. While the training school may be a self-sustained programme, WIFA will hand 100 deserving children scholarships to be part of the MUSS clinics. Two of the MUSS coaches will be here through the year."

Once the stadium is complete, WIFA will conduct competitive games of the local league which will give semi-professional players a chance to play on the world-class pitch. "We will offer the ground to kids, organize seminars and clinics. The idea is to make the facilities at Cooperage a ladder for kids to chase their dreams," he said.

A big positive with artificial turf is that monsoons, however harsh, wouldn't be an impediment and football can be played all through the year.

Sherley Singh, who runs the Indian Tigers' Football Academy, said, "Football grounds are virtually non-existent in our city. The BMC grounds are uneven, have stones and the pitches are in a bad condition. The biggest challenge is to get a good ground and the turf at Cooperage is a blessing. At least somebody has understood what the younger generation needs."
