Liga - Barcelona see off spirited Real Betis

Barcelona's players celebrates Lionel Messi's second goal against Real Betis during their Spanish first division soccer match at Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona - 0

Xavi and Messi both struck inside the opening 12 minutes to stun the visitors, but a rousing response from Pepe Mel’s team saw them pull one back before half time through Ruben Castro.

Shortly after the interval half-time substitute Roque Santa Cruz equalised with a superb shot, but Barca’s increased pressure first saw Betis reduced to ten men when defender Mario was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Sanchez then scored with 15 minutes remaining before Messi added his second of the evening from the penalty spot just before full time, adding a gloss to the scoreline which belie the problems that the away side had caused Barcelona at various stages throughout the game.
With one eye firmly fixed on Wednesday’s forthcoming Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid, Barcelona boss Guardiola started with Gerard Pique and Dani Alves on the bench. The absence of the former’s presence at the back was felt immediately as Betis mounted an early brace of attacks.

First Jorge Molina was denied by Victor Valdes in a one-on-one, then the striker got a firm near-post header on target from a corner which the Barca goalkeeper was equal to. Rattled by their opponents’ clear intention to have a go, Barcelona took exception and scored two goals in two minutes to leave the visitors reeling after what had been a promising start.
A visionary pass from Alexis allowed Cesc Fabregas a shot on goal which the midfielder struck Betis goalkeeper Casto’s left post with, and Xavi was on hand to place the rebound into an empty net as he scored on his 400th appearance for the club to give the hosts the lead in the 10th minute.
No sooner had the game restarted than Barca were again on the attack, and Alexis was once more the provider. Andres Iniesta played the Chilean in down the left and his hard, low cross was inch-perfect for the onrushing Messi to sweep home from close range.

Shocked but not so severely that they folded, Betis instead continued to persevere with the attacking approach they had started with, and as both sides played expansive attacking football the away team continued to create chances too, Castro shooting over from close range before pulling a goal back on 32 minutes. It came after Molina went through on Valdes, and after being forced wide by the Barca ‘keeper he calmly retained possession, waiting for support which allowed Castro a simple finish. It was the first league goal conceded by Barcelona at Camp Nou this season.

An inspired change at the break by Mel brought the on-loan Santa Cruz into the action, and when Iniesta lost the ball inside the opposition half in the 52nd minute the Paraguayan striker had one of the first touches of the resulting counter attack before finishing it off. A squared pass inside from Castro on the left wing was followed by a touch and curling effort from Santa Cruz, whose goal from the edge of the area levelled matters.
Both outfits attacked in bouts but it was Barca who applied the greater pressure, and in the 70th minute Mario’s foul on Messi drew his second caution of the evening and Betis were reduced to ten men.
Guardiola’s men pushed even harder and five minutes later Xavi’s excellent pass picked out Alexis who checked outside a challenge and placed a low, hard shot past Casto to make it 3-2.

With four minutes remaining Betis defender Jose Dorado was penalised for handball inside his own area when it appeared that Eric Abidal had indeed committed the same offence in Barcelona’s build-up play, but that mattered little as the referee made his decision and pointed to the penalty spot.
Messi duly obliged to put the seal on victory, maintaining his side’s close pursuit of their arch rivals Real Madrid who they encounter in the cup competition in midweek.
