Chelsea skipper pays respect to former boss

John Terry believes Andre Villas-Boas deserves credit for what he started at Chelsea and says the players will not forget his vision for the club.

Villas-Boas reportedly did not enjoy the best of relationships with a number of senior players in the Stamford Bridge dressing room, but Terry insists that he had the utmost respect for the Portuguese and is still in touch with him.

The Blues skipper says he thought about Villas-Boas after the midweek victory over Napoli sealed a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

"I'm still in contact with him - like a lot of players here - and probably will remain that way," Terry said.

"He won't be forgotten. It's disappointing, really, because we would have loved things to go on and he had a vision and a plan and, unfortunately, that gets cut short with disappointing performances from us.

"At the end of the day, we're the ones out there performing and we weren't performing as well as we could do."

Terry added: "Andre started something here and I think credit has to go for what he started.

"Unfortunately, the club made a tough decision, as they said, but the players, we don't forget what he started at this club."

Incredible

Terry failed to finish the game against Napoli after making a remarkable comeback from knee surgery, and he could be rested for Sunday's FA Cup tie at home to Leicester.
He said: "Just got a tweak in the calf at the weekend.

"It just seemed to tighten up and I had cramp in the other calf so I was like Douglas Bader at the end."

The victory over Napoli may have kept Chelsea's European dreams alive but they face a tough task to go all the way and lift the Champions League trophy.

Holders Barcelona remain the favourites to win again, while Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid have also been in magnificent form all season.

Chelsea may have to beat both teams to become champions but first they must face Benfica in the last eight, and Terry is confident his men can compete with anyone.

"I think Barca stand out from everyone but what Madrid have done this year in the league and what Jose has got them doing is incredible.

"But playing like we did against Napoli, I think any team would be sitting there and thinking, 'You know what? Chelsea have probably had a difficult season but I wouldn't fancy that'."

Liga - Barcelona see off spirited Real Betis

Barcelona's players celebrates Lionel Messi's second goal against Real Betis during their Spanish first division soccer match at Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona - 0

Xavi and Messi both struck inside the opening 12 minutes to stun the visitors, but a rousing response from Pepe Mel’s team saw them pull one back before half time through Ruben Castro.

Shortly after the interval half-time substitute Roque Santa Cruz equalised with a superb shot, but Barca’s increased pressure first saw Betis reduced to ten men when defender Mario was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Sanchez then scored with 15 minutes remaining before Messi added his second of the evening from the penalty spot just before full time, adding a gloss to the scoreline which belie the problems that the away side had caused Barcelona at various stages throughout the game.
With one eye firmly fixed on Wednesday’s forthcoming Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid, Barcelona boss Guardiola started with Gerard Pique and Dani Alves on the bench. The absence of the former’s presence at the back was felt immediately as Betis mounted an early brace of attacks.

First Jorge Molina was denied by Victor Valdes in a one-on-one, then the striker got a firm near-post header on target from a corner which the Barca goalkeeper was equal to. Rattled by their opponents’ clear intention to have a go, Barcelona took exception and scored two goals in two minutes to leave the visitors reeling after what had been a promising start.
A visionary pass from Alexis allowed Cesc Fabregas a shot on goal which the midfielder struck Betis goalkeeper Casto’s left post with, and Xavi was on hand to place the rebound into an empty net as he scored on his 400th appearance for the club to give the hosts the lead in the 10th minute.
No sooner had the game restarted than Barca were again on the attack, and Alexis was once more the provider. Andres Iniesta played the Chilean in down the left and his hard, low cross was inch-perfect for the onrushing Messi to sweep home from close range.

Shocked but not so severely that they folded, Betis instead continued to persevere with the attacking approach they had started with, and as both sides played expansive attacking football the away team continued to create chances too, Castro shooting over from close range before pulling a goal back on 32 minutes. It came after Molina went through on Valdes, and after being forced wide by the Barca ‘keeper he calmly retained possession, waiting for support which allowed Castro a simple finish. It was the first league goal conceded by Barcelona at Camp Nou this season.

An inspired change at the break by Mel brought the on-loan Santa Cruz into the action, and when Iniesta lost the ball inside the opposition half in the 52nd minute the Paraguayan striker had one of the first touches of the resulting counter attack before finishing it off. A squared pass inside from Castro on the left wing was followed by a touch and curling effort from Santa Cruz, whose goal from the edge of the area levelled matters.
Both outfits attacked in bouts but it was Barca who applied the greater pressure, and in the 70th minute Mario’s foul on Messi drew his second caution of the evening and Betis were reduced to ten men.
Guardiola’s men pushed even harder and five minutes later Xavi’s excellent pass picked out Alexis who checked outside a challenge and placed a low, hard shot past Casto to make it 3-2.

With four minutes remaining Betis defender Jose Dorado was penalised for handball inside his own area when it appeared that Eric Abidal had indeed committed the same offence in Barcelona’s build-up play, but that mattered little as the referee made his decision and pointed to the penalty spot.
Messi duly obliged to put the seal on victory, maintaining his side’s close pursuit of their arch rivals Real Madrid who they encounter in the cup competition in midweek.

Barca Defeats Real

Barcelona may enter this weekend's round of La Liga fixtures with a psychological advantage after beating Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

League champions Barca came from a goal down to beat Cup holders Real 2-1 in their quarter-final first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

It was a third win for the Catalan giants from four meetings with Real this season, including the two-legged Super Cup in August.

Several minor slip-ups in La Liga mean Barca find themselves five points back from Jose Mourinho's league leaders.

But their dominance over Real in individual contests cannot be denied, and it remains to be seen what impact the Copa del Rey duel, if any, will have on the destiny of the championship.

Fresh from their latest success in the capital, Barca travel to La Rosaleda to face Malaga on Saturday.

The Qatar-owned club spent big in the off-season as they seek to make an impression on the traditional balance of power in Spain.

But those expectations are yet to be fulfilled - Malaga sit eighth just past the midway point of the season, and are without a win from their past six matches in all competitions.

They went down 2-1 away to Sporting Gijon last Sunday, and exited the Copa del Rey with a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Real in the round of 16.

As for Real, Mourinho's team will look to forget their latest disappointment against Barca by ensuring they retain their buffer at the top with victory away to Athletic Bilbao.

In other matches, third-placed Valencia host Osasuna at the Mestalla.

The team one place below Valencia, Levante, go in search of their first win in three matches away to bottom side Real Zaragoza.

European regulars Villarreal are enduring a nightmare campaign, and will look to improve on second bottom in the league when they visit Sporting Gijon.

Europa League hopefuls Sevilla are at home to promoted club Real Betis, while an improving Real Sociedad await the visit of mid-table Atletico Madrid.

Finally, Espanyol are at home to promoted Granada, and the other new arrivals, Rayo Vallecano, play host to Mallorca.
