Doordarshan Will Telecasting Federation Cup 2011

AIFF took matters in their own hands and decided to rope in DD(Doordarshan) as their Telecast Partners for the ongoing Federation Cup 2011. AIFF general secretary Kushal Das confirmed it to Times of India by saying, "We have more or less finalized the deal verbally and will be releasing the payments to DD soon".

He was also quoted saying,"The marketing rights are with IMG-Reliance and there was some technical hitch which held up the finalization of the deal, hence Brand Value Communications Ltd was given the broadcasting rights. Now that we have finalized the DD deal, the live telecast will reach the rest (of the country). We should certainly have the live telecast feed by Tuesday latest," .

Brand Value Communications with their channels News Times Assam and News Times Bangla is currently the regional partner of AIFF for the 33rd edition of Federation Cup 2011.

                               Recall History

Coach Armando Colaco handed India its first win under him and Who could have guessed it would have come in this fashion and against such a strong opposition. India managed to create history as they defeated the 94th ranked nation Qatar in an away match played at the Al-Sadd Stadium on Sunday, 17th July.

Both side fielded new faces as they were preparing for their respective upcoming matches in the FIFAWorld Cup Qualifiers. India started the proceedings brightly as they had much of the possession. India went on to take the early lead as Defender Debabrata Roy was brought down in the Qatar Box by their Captain Bilal Mohamed in the 16th minute, and Sunil Chhetri had no problems to convert from the spot. The home team struggled to make any impact on the game as Indian team played the ball along the ground, exchanging short passes. India went on to stay with the one goal lead at the half time break.

Sunil Chhetri scored again
through a penalty
The second half saw both managers changing few players, with Armando Colaco changing his entire team except for Goalkeeper and Captain Subrata Paul. India thereafter relied more on counter attacks, as Qatar were looking to grab the decisive equalizer which never actually came. The Qatari forwards were kept at bay by the Indian defence. Against the run of play, India managed to double its lead on the 73rd minute thanks to a well placed finish by Sushil Kumar Singh who came in the second half. Sushil placed the ball past Qatari Custodian Saad Abdulla al Sheeb after receiving a cross from Baljit Singh Sahini. India's two goal lead was cut down to one in the very next minute, by  Ibrahim Khalfan after he was assisted by Sebastian Soria. India managed to hold on to the one goal lead and hence, defeated Qatar 2-1.

Both the Coach and the Captain were very pleased with the victory, but they also pointed out that the main challenge is still knocking at the doors, the World Cup Qualifiers against UAE. The expectations will surely rise after this emphatic win which was unexpected to say

Indian women beat Bahrain

Riding on striker Sasmita Malik’s brace, Indian women defeated Bahrain 2-1 in their first International Friendly in Bahrain. Sasmita, the captain of the side scored her first goal as early as the 3rd minute of the match.
Spurred by the early goal, the Indians pressed hard and were eventually rewarded in the 35th minute when Sasmita scored her second goal of the match.
Hardly had the celebrations died, Bahrain managed to pull one back in the 36th minute. But the Indians didn’t allow their opponents to dictate terms and held onto their lead to win the match.
Coach Chief Coach Mohammad Shahid Jabbar credited the girls on the victory. “They have worked hard in the camp and deserve all the praise.”
An elated Sasmita declared, “It’s a wonderful feeling to score both the goals in an International Friendly. I want to thank all my teammates and coach for supporting me.”
India next play Bahrain on September 20. The third International Friendly is slated for September 23.

U-16 camp for AFC Qualifiers kick-off

The U-16 India boys began their preparation for the AFC U-16 Qualifiers at the Conscient Football Campus in the Heritage School in Gurgaon. Head Coach Thomas Joseph, assisted by coaches C.M. Ranjit & Mario, trained the boys as they acclimatised themselves to the new surroundings. The team stressed on fitness drills while having match practice at the same time.
India have been clubbed in Group C along with Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Bahrain, and Krygyzstan. Head Coach Thomas Joseph said, “It’s a tough group. Uzbekistan are the favourites from our group. We need to play to our strength.”
The squad will be leaving for Tashkent on September 29.
Joseph was very much appreciative about the practice facilities at the campus. “The grounds are well-maintained and conducive for good football. We are impressed with the facility provided to us,” he said.
‘Conscient Football’ had earlier played host to India’s U-23 camps and will host an AFC ‘C’ Licence Course later this month.

I want to represent India at international stage: Odafa

Mohun Bagan's new recruit,Okolie Odafa has expressed his desire to represent the Indian football team, for which he is even ready to surrender his Nigerian passport.

"I have been part of this magnificent country for so many years now. If I fall into the scheme of things for the Indian national football team, I would be very much interested in representing India at the international stage.

"For that, I need to surrender my Nigerian passport which I don't mind. But I need to discuss it at length with my family," Odafa, who was signed for a record 1.7 crore by Mohun Bagan, said.

A club looking to revive its fortunes after a disastrous past season, Mohun Bagan were lured into doling such a huge amount for the formerChurchill Brothers striker who has been topping the scoring charts for the past four I-League seasons.

The price tag, however, does not seem to burden Odafa. "Every professional is burdened with pressure. I want to play my normal game. Football is all about scoring goals and I want to score as many as possible for Mohun Bagan. Football is a sport where 11 compete against 11. I will just play my role," he said.

Once shunned by Kolkata, Odafa has returned to the city with a new challenge.

"It's a new challenge. I was happy in Churchill Brothers and Mr. Churchill (Alemao) loved me like anything. But one needs to move on in life. I would lie if I say I don't miss Churchill Brothers. But as a professional, you need to change gears. There's a fear of losing respect if one stays at one certain place for too long. Maybe, I may go back to Churchill Brothers one day.

"The Almighty took me away from Kolkata; the Almighty has now brought me back to Kolkata; the Almighty has also given me the signal that people are expecting a lot from me," he said.

After being with Churchill Brothers for so many seasons, one is bound to ask Odafa about the kind of sentiment it will evoke when Mohun Bagan play his former club in the ongoing Federation Cup.

"One is my former team, the memories of which I will carry forever. The other is my present team where I earn my bread and butter from. I will give my 100 per cent to ensure Mohun Bagan win every match this season. They have signed me for a purpose and I can't let them down. The rest is for the Almighty to decide," he said.

Asked about former player Cheema Okorie, who reportedly brokered the deal with Mohun Bagan, Odafa said, "Cheema has always been my friend, philosopher and guide. Cheema has taught me what to do and what not to. His experience of playing in India has guided me. I consult him on almost every matter, be it professional or personal."

As far as progress of Indian football was concerned, Odafa only had positive things to say.

"The attitude of the players, the fitness level and off-the-ball play have improved leaps and bounds. There are so many good players around; there's competition among them. Most importantly the physique of the players is bound to strike you."

Varin Mehta joins Belgium's Royal Antwerp FC... becomes the fourth Indian to play for a foreign club

History is set to be rewritten in Indian football and this time in the name of Varin Mehta.
The 21-year-old has officially signed on the dotted lines of Belgium’s Royal Antwerp FC for the coming season, thus becoming only the fourth Indian to ply his trade in a foreign league after Mohammad Salim (Celtic in 1937), Bhaichung Bhutia (Bury FC 1999-2002) and Sunil Chhetri (Kansas City Wizards 2010-11).
The Mumbai based lad has been trialing with the club from past one year and his efforts finally bore fruit when club officials decided to offer him a season-long contract.
Interestingly, the club is one of the oldest clubs in Belgium and is a sister-concern of English giants Manchester United. The club has also one of the biggest fan-base in the country, but that hasn’t helped them as they have been struggling in the second division from 2004.
Speaking from Antwerp, Belgium, Varin confirmed his signing and was excited to don the club colours for the coming season. “It would be a great day for me. It would be like a dream come true. My hard work from past one year has finally paid off,” said Varin.
Till 2009, the youngster was part of the Mahindra United U-19 and also played in the I-League U-19. But the club shutting shop from competitive football meant he started looking for opportunities outside India.
With some close contacts, the Mehta family finally got in touch with the club president who offered him to trial with the club. But things weren’t as easy as it sounded as the 5’8 striker had to slog for the coming year and prove that he deserved to play at this level. “Many people would ask me questions like, son! Are you an Indian? What are you doing playing football, you should be playing cricket. Does India even play football,” said Mehta.
People questioned him but he was determined to prove the odds wrong. “From the mid 30’s in Mumbai to -5 in Antwerp, I was determined to face anything that came my way. Acclimatizing to the chilly climate to getting use to one touch football, are some of things that I adapted very quickly. I was glad that I finally proved every one wrong,” he said.
Besides him was his mother Gira, who cared of him for the coming two years. “She made lot of sacrifices. We being strict vegetarians, she took care of my food and made sure that I didn’t suffer. Getting VISA for her was difficult, so she decided to study her masters and that’s how she is with me. I owe a lot to her,” said Varin thanking his coaches Santosh Kashyap and Abid Kenkre.
Impressing the coach was one thing and securing a professional contract was another. “There was one major hurdle that had to be cleared. The club had financial difficulties and hiring a foreign player like me meant that they had to pay a certain some of money (according to their government rules), which was out of their budget. They suggested me if a sponsor can be roped in, hiring me wouldn’t be a problem. After making rounds of several corporates for months, RIL decided to sponsor and things fell in place,” he clarified.
His father Girish Mehta added that had his son playing in India, he still wouldn’t have secured a club. “Having in India would have meant that he would have been begging people to take him in the team. I never wanted that, so I thought of sending him abroad,” said the senior Mehta.
Having achieved a part of his dream, Varin wants to represent India at the highest level. “I don’t want to go to I-League now. My first goal is to cement a place in this team and make my mark in European football. I want to take it step by step and play for better clubs and eventually an EPL club. I also want to wear national colours, when an opportunity comes my way that would be my ultimate achievement,” he signed off.

Chika Wali returns to Pune FC

Pune FC have beefed up their defense by signing up Nigerian Chika Wali ahead of the club's campaign in the season-opening Federation Cup football tournament, commencing on Saturday.
The 23-year-old central defender, thus, returns to the club where he began his professional career in 2007-2008 when he was part of its successful qualification to the elite I-League before playing his part when the club ended up third in its debut year (2009-10).
Last season, Chika had played for Chirag United SC which has been re-named this season as Prayag United SC.
"Chika is a strong central defender, who has the experience and is a known player to quite a few players in the line-up," said Pune FC's Head of Operations, Chirag Tanna.
"His experience of playing in Indian conditions for four years at a stretch will come in handy," he added.
The Nigerian's signing improves coach Derrick Pereira's options in the position as he can now choose from among Caitano Costa, Rolling Son Hungyo and newly-signed Anas Edatodika, a club release said.
With Chika's signing, following that of attacking midfielder Douhou Pierre, Pune FC have completed their quota of signing three foreigners this year. Striker Mandjou Keita had already signed at the end of the last season.
"I am happy to get him back after a year. Chika has been a player of the past for Pune FC and his return along with past regulars in Douhou and Jeje Lalpekhlua will help the team to perform
better," explained Pereira.

Indian National Team: Pakistan FA To Take Legal Action Against The Organisers Of Indo-Pak Series

PFF are ready to take legal action against against the organizers of Indo-Pak series...

Pakistan,India Flag

The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has decided to take legal action against the organisers of the two-match football series between India and Pakistan which was set to commence in United Kingdom from September 3, 2011.
The tour, which had been dubbed as the 'Clash of the Titans India-Pakistan UK tour,' was to take place between the months of July and August this year but the series was then reduced to two matches in September following the first postponement by the organisers. However, several hours after the PFF announced its team and captain for the series, the UK-based organisers, Touchsky Sports again postponed the series for an indefinite period.

India under-23 were to play Pakistan on September 3 in Derby before travelling all the way to East London to take on England U-23 on September 6. The Indian tour would have officially come to an end on September 9 when the crowd would have been treated to another India-Pakistan clash in Glasgow.
The organisers, Touchsky Sports had full broadcasting and advertising rights for the series with one of the India-Pak match being dedicated in the memory of the three Pakistani youths, who were killed in the Birmingham riots. The excuse that the organizers had previously given the PFF for postponement was that they had to postpone the series on the request of the bereaved family of the slain boys.
However Goal.com had reported earlier that the organisers hadn't got enough sponsors and takers for the event and having realised that they wouldn't recover the costs, the tour was chopped at the eleventh hour.

A PFF official said that a letter has been sent to Touchsky Sports about a possible legal action.
"The series is now as good as cancelled as far as we understand and we have asked the organisers for a settlement for the financial losses caused to us, and also for an apology for the inconvenience and embarrassment which we have suffered because of the series not being held on schedule," a PFF official was quoted saying.
Another source said that before sending the letter to seek a settlement and apology from Touchsky Sports the PFF President Saleh Faisal Hayat had also spoken and consulted the officials in the Asian Football Confederation.
Jeje and Shilton Celebrate After Victory Over Pakistan
"We have sent a letter to the head of the TSS and if we dont get the settlement and apology we can initiate legal action against them," the source added.
Another official spoke of the disappointment that the cancellation of this series has caused in both, the Indian and the Pakistani camp. He said, "There is no doubt the unilateral decision to postpone the series two days ahead of our team`s departure for England left not only us but the All India Football Federation (AIFF) also very disappointed."
He also pointed out that the series had no chance of being played in the immediate future as the Pakistan Premier League (PPL) was due to resume in a matter of days and with the SAFF Championship coming up in December, both - India and Pakistan – would need sufficient time to prepare for the Cup. "Both teams also have to prepare for the South Asian Football Federation Cup in December.”

Is Indian Football Ready For The Baan-Storm?

The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) long running search for a technical director seems to have finally ended, with the highly experienced and much travelled Dutchman Robert Baan being touted as the possible man to fill the vacancy.

Rob Baan

1
. Born on 1st April 1943 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Baan is certainly not considered a fool in the footballing circles around the world.

With almost a forty five year experience in management and other technical positions across Dutch football as well as stints in Asia and Australia, the sixty eight year old would bring his reservoir of extensive knowledge accumulated in all these years with him to the job.

    2. He was in charge of one game for the Dutch National team in 1981, a game against Cyprus which his team duly won 3-0. While more than 25 years later he took over the reigns of the Australian National team in 2007, a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in a match held in England.
Baan Was Ronaldo's Mentor When he First Came To Europe....
    3. While the Dutchman’s International management career might not be much to write home about, he has managed several of the biggest teams in Dutch football, including Twente, Sparta Rotterdam, Roda JC and Excelsior. He was also an assistant manager with the Netherlands National team for 5 years and at PSV Eindhoven for 3 years.
      4. Not high profile enough? Well in his management career Baan has guided the careers of some of the biggest names in world football including Marco Van Basten, Johan Neeskens, Ronald de Boer and Ronaldo.

      5. However it wasn’t until he left the dugout for the position of Technical Director that he started receiving the praise he deserved. Spending six years at Dutch giants Feyenoord as a technical director, Baan changed the face of the youth structure at the club. The club’s present status as one of the best youth academies in Europe owes a lot to this sixty eight year old Rotterdam native.

      6. After his success with Feyenoord, the Dutchman had stints with the Al-Jazeera Club and then the Netherland National team, where he convinced all the Eredivisie clubs to implement the same playing structure across their youth structure, before Guus Hiddink recommended him to the Australian authorities and he was duly appointed as Australia’s technical director.
Will These Youngsters Learn To Play The Dutch Way?...
      7. In his two year stay in Australia, he completely changed the English methods of coaching adopted in the country and introduced them to more possession based Dutch style football.

      8. His main principle for youth development is that kids shouldn’t be drilled tactically in their formation years upto the age of 12 and natural talent should be encouraged. He also felt that goalkeepers should be played as sweeper-backs in seven a side football so that they learn to use the ball better when in possession. He also felt that keeping goalkeepers for an U-8 or U-10 levels was a wasteful exercise.

      9. What will be in particular music to the AIFF ears is that he is totally against the English direct style of playing, which he calls too “simple” and also is known as someone who avoids confrontations with authorities and likes to negotiate his way past problems.

      10. The Dutchman is also known to encourage homegrown coaches, who he thinks work better at the grassroot level than any foreign coach can. He implemented several programs to motivate natives from Australia to take up coaching badges. When he resigned from his job in 2008 as the technical director of Australia to return to Netherlands, as he was home sick, his work was applauded, ranging from every football related authority in Australia as well as the general public.
Coming with an impeccable record as a technical director, and with an experience of more than 45 years, the 68 year old Baan seems like the right person to take up the cause of the technical development of footballers at the grassroots level in India

Do YOU think he is the right man for the job? Have YOUR say by commenting below....

The End Of An Era In Indian Football: A Look Back At Some Of The Top Bhaichung Bhutia Moments

Bhaichung Bhutia celebrates goal against Turkmenistah at AFC Challenge cup at Hyderabad

Indeed for long, Bhaichung Bhutia has been a lone warrior in the midst of a crumbling and declining footballing structure in India. A true hero who fought his way against all the ills and odds for the cause of his nation!

So much so, that after two decades of tireless service, 'Bhaichung Bhutia' is THE name that is synonymous to Indian football. A "one man army", in the truest sense o
        f the term.

In the midst of the 'Ronaldo'-s, 'Rivaldo'-s and the 'Messi'-s, the Sikkimese Sniper has been the man who stood out in the heart of this billion-people nation. As the sun finally descends upon Bhutia's international career, we at Goal.com look back at some of the best moments of his illustrious career. A "two-decade show"  that has highlighted India's existence in the footballing world.

International Debut Against Uzbekistan In The 1995 Nehru Cup

Having had already impressed the footballing fraternity with his exceptional skills in the domestic circuit, a young Bhaichung Bhutia was now talked about to be the next big thing in Indian football. And thus the International call-up soon came his way as he was tipped against a stubborn Uzbek side in his first match, at the 1995 Nehru Cup.

Lone Flag Bearer For Indian Football

While one may have expected first-game nerves to hinder his performance, Bhaichung emerged above the shadow of doubts as he grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring on his debut and thus becoming India's youngest ever goalscorer at 19. As things stood, the goal proved to be the only goal of the match and India went on to beat Uzbekistan 1-0.

The tournament, however, wasn't quite fruitful for the Indians as they failed to qualify for the next stage but by then the birth of the legend had already taken place!

        2002 LG Cup Final:

Bhutia Inspires A Mighty Fightback Against Host Nation Vietnam

Bhutia, was by now the captain of the Indian national team. A place in the final was booked and the Indians were on the verge of their first major International title since their bronze medal win at the 1970 Asian Games.

However, on their way, stood a rather tricky Vietnamese side, cheered and backed by a hostile home crowd at the Thong Nhat stadium.

Charged up by the home support, Vietnam began in whirlwind fashion as their speedy forwards soon took control of the play as the Indian succumbed to an early 2-0 deficit.

With things looking bleak, Bhaichung inspired a miraculous come-back as he scored on either side of the half to bring India on level terms. A late goal by Abhishek Yadav ensured a historic win for the Indians.

Twin Nehru Cup Triumphs in 2007 and 2009

Yet again, some inspirational displays by the captain meant India lifted their second major International tournament in 5 years, with Bhaichung scoring crucial goals against Cambodia,  Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan on route to the final of the Nehru Cup 2007.
Taking The Victory Lap Around The Fortress

The consistency was maintained as the Indians defended the title two years later with Bhaichung again playing a significant role. India lost the opening game to Lebanon and the pressure mounted given the amount of money spent on their training in Barcelona. It was the skipper who inspired the team when the chips were down. On the way to the finale, Bhutia earned his 100th cap for India in a 2–1 win over Kyrgyzstan, becoming the first Indian player to reach this milestone. Like on his debut, Bhaichung went on to score on his 100th match too.

His stellar performances through out the tournament earned him the 'Player of the tournament' award.

        2008 Challenge Cup Triumph

This was arguably the biggest success of his career as he lead India to a historic Asian Cup qualification following their triumph in the Challenge Cup.

His cute little volley goal along with Sunil Chhetri's hattrick in the final against Tajikistan meant that the Indians earned an automatic qualification for the 2011 Asian Cup after a span of 27 years.

He was once again adjudged as the 'Most Valuable Player' of the tournament as he finished with a tally of 3 goals.

The 2011 AFC Asian Cup Appearance

On what was supposed to be THE biggest tournament of Bhutia's footballing career, a recurrent injury problem meant that Bhaichung's dream of participating in the continental tournament was confined to only a 15 minute cameo against South Korea in the final group league match.

        Bhutia's Last Appearance For India

However, his will and desire to help the team's cause was undisputable. Despite counted out by many, he decided to stay on with the squad. And although his on-field contributions were negligible, his moral support to the team went a long way as India registered some spirited displays against much tougher opponents like Australia and Bahrain.

Incidentally, the match against South Korea, would also go on to be his last appearance in the International stage. Twist of the fate as you may call it, one can't help but feel that the legend that Bhutia is, he certainly deserved a much better farewell.

Top 10 Moments in Indian Football For 2010

        Moments to remember .........

It is time for Indian Football fans to look forward for another eventful year in 2011 where Indian National team starts off with their Asian Cup 2011 campaign. But before we completely shift our focus on the new sojourn, we have listed the top 10 moments in the world of Indian football.

Note: The list is in no particular ascending or descending order of importance.

Reincarnated By Themselves - The Indian Women's Football Team

After being stripped off from the FIFA rankings for not playing an international match for almost two years, they forced their presence back into the ranking system in March 2010.

        Making India Proud!

In February, the Indian women won the gold medal in the South Asian Games in Dhaka; and recently in December, to add to their tally, they created history by clinching the first ever SAFF Women’s Championship title in Bangladesh.

The Woman Who Became 'Man' Of The Match - Referee Maria Rebello

Referee Maria Rebello became the first female with a FIFA referee's batch to officiate in the 64th Santosh Trophy, in the match between Delhi and Madhya Pradesh played at Kolkata, on July 25 of the year 2010!

        Congratulations!

The Goan based officiator defied the odds of beating the rough with the smooth for the Indian female with her command over the game. She is also part of the AFC elite panel of referees and became the first in her gender to do so in India.

Third Indian To Live A Foreign Dream - Sunil Chhetri

Sunil Chhetri became the third Indian player to play on foreign shores after Mohamed Salim (Celtic) and Bhaichung Bhutia (Bury FC) and would only be the eighth Asian to ply his trade in the MLS.

The Third Indian To Do So

But life wasn’t easy for the Delhi boy after his move to Kansas City Wizards. The adjustment to the new conditions, people, climate and football took time and eventually made him more mature. Chhetri also got the opportunity to play against Manchester United while he represented the Wizards.

In two other attempts, Gouramangi Moirangthem failed to secure a contract with Australian A-League club Melbourne Heart FC and MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps turned down the option to sign Subrata Paul however insisting that they will keep track of the goalkeeper's progress in the future.

Men In Blues Going Global – The Indian National Team

International exposure has been one of the major drawbacks for Indian football for many years together. But ever since British coach Bob Houghton took over, the team has been getting the much needed foreign tours to add to their experience.

        Foreign Exposure

Starting off with a short camp in Dubai, followed by a 2 months long training camp in Portugal the team finally ended their Asian Cup preparation by having similar camps in Dubai and Doha. Since September the Men in Blues have faced a series of international opponents. Starting with Thailand in Bangkok to a return leg in New Delhi, the Indian team played four more home matches including the likes of Namibia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Yemen.

Bob Houghton’s boys further went to Dubai where they faced heavy weight teams like Iraq, Kuwait and UAE. Despite the fact that the India lost most of the matches by a huge margin, the fans will be glad that at least their team played internationals as that isn't always the case.

30th Title For The Formidable – Bengal Santosh Trophy Team

Santosh Trophy has always been a special tournament in Indian football given that teams from every nook and corner of the country participate in this competition. The 62nd edition of the tournament contested amongst the various states and public sector units saw hosts Bengal clinch the title.

Boys Doing What Men Failed – India U-23 In Asian Games

The Indian U-23 team led by Sukhwinder Singh achieved a rare feat by storming into the knock out stages of the prestigious Asian Games in Guangzhou, China despite missing out on key players who were part of the senior national camp.

        They Are The Future

Despite having star players like Bhaichung Bhutia and Subrata Paul in the 2006 edition of Asian Games, the team was knocked out in the first round on goal difference. But it was the turn for the likes of Jewel Raja, Joaquim Abranches and Jeje Lalpekhlua to show their class.

It was only after 1982 that India entered the knock out stages of the Asian Games thanks to their splendid win over Singapore in the last league match. Sukhwinder Singh’s team however lost 5-0 to eventual champions Japan in the round of 16.

Defending The Title – East Bengal Club

East Bengal will be remembered for their feat of successfully retaining the Federation Cup. Having won the tournament in 2009 under Belgian coach Philipe De Ridder, they went on to beat arch rivals Mohun Bagan in Cuttack to keep the silverware under their custody.

        Two In A Row

British coach Trevor James Morgan led the team with Tolgay Ozbey and Robin Singh playing an influential role in the Red and Gold’s road to play the AFC Cup.

        Podium Finish – Pune FC

Newly promoted professional football team from the state of Maharasthra, Pune FC has certainly been the surprise package in Indian football for the year 2010. The team from Maharashtra did not have a good start to their season as they were in the bottom half of the table at the end of the first eight matches.

        Surprising

But Derrick Parreira’s side showed their class mainly in the second phase of the league finally going on to clinch the third spot in the league leaving behind formidable teams like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Salgaocar.

Starting off their journey from Kolkata they went on to travel to Mumbai, Pune, Goa, Bangalore, Kerala, Punjab before finally ending their trip in Delhi where they met all the I-League clubs and presented their outcome of the inspection.

        Were They Impressed?

The results from the inspection were not surprising as none of the I-League clubs were able to make their mark in the Professional Club licensing criteria. Majority of the clubs even failed to get a green signal for the I-League leave alone AFC Champions League. The clubs were given a deadline to rectify their shortcomings by the 31st of December. The same AFC team is expected to visit India again in February.

The squad will be leaving for Tashkent on September 29.
Joseph was very much appreciative about the practice facilities at the campus. “The grounds are well-maintained and conducive for good football. We are impressed with the facility provided to us,” he said.

        1

              Congratulations!

Sunil Chhetri became the third Indian player to play on foreign shores after Mohamed Salim (Celtic) and Bhaichung Bhutia (Bury FC) and would only be the eighth Asian to ply his trade in the MLS.

The Third Indian To Do So

International exposure has been one of the major drawbacks for Indian football for many years together. But ever since British coach Bob Houghton took over, the team has been getting the much needed foreign tours to add to their experience.

              Foreign Exposure

Starting off with a short camp in Dubai, followed by a 2 months long training camp in Portugal the team finally ended their Asian Cup preparation by having similar camps in Dubai and Doha. Bob Houghton’s boys further went to Dubai where they faced heavy weight teams like Iraq, Kuwait and UAE. Despite the fact that the India lost most of the matches by a huge margin, the fans will be glad that at least their team played internationals as that isn't always the case.
